This spectacular journey to the Appalachain Mountains visits Mt. Airy, North Carolina (home to Andy Griffith). Also included is the fantastic scenery along the Blue Ridge Parkway, interesting tours and the fabulous Tennessee Homecoming – a festival that showcases some 400 musicians featuring authentic Southern Appalachain bluegrass, Gospel, folk and old time country music!
October 8: Travel across the Carolinas through Hickory and on to Mount Airy. Tour of “Mayberry” includes Goober’s Fillin’ Station, the Old Jail, Opie’s Candy Shop and Andy’s original home place. Dinner and a movie this evening! (D)
October 9: Drive along the Blue Ridge Parkway in search of Appalachian Heritage and enjoy a tour of Rev. Bob Childress’ stone churches built in 1920-1930. Continue to Pigeon Forge for two nights. Dinner and a Smoky Mountains show. (B, D)
October 10: Day trip to Clinton, Tennessee for the Homecoming! Museum of Appalachia, participate in the daily hymm sing in the log church, and treat yourself to some of the Southeast’s finest music. Dozens of local cooks serve country food prepared on woodburning stoves and in iron kettles. 175 artisans demonstrate old time mountain quilting, basket weaving, splitting cedar rails, spinning and weaving, whittling, caning chairs, and constructing old time instruments. October 11: Travel over the Smoky Mountains and cross the Appalachian Trail and make a stop in Cherokee’s Christmas Shop. Next, enjoy a bountiful lunch at the Dillard House, known to serve their “family Style” meals in the generous proportions that are the hallmark of southern hospitality. Return home this afternoon.
